We’re very proud to be dusting off our awards shelf and making space for a new gong following our success at the Active York Sports Awards. Our York Tandem Club was recognised in the ‘Active in York’ category which celebrates groups or individuals achieving great things in their leisure time and are inspiring others to “get active”.

Lizzie, Hannah, Zoe and Phil went along to represent the club and were delighted to share a table with category sponsors Benenden Health. An inspiring and humbling evening, there was some tough competition, so to say we were surprised at winning is an understatement!

In the last five years our York Tandem Club has more than doubled the number of people it supports. With an average age of around 60, a number of the members had previously been quite active but were finding it increasingly difficult to keep fit and healthy. The Club has gone from strength to strength and in the words of one member: “Not only do I get to ride a bike, which would be impossible for me to do independently, I’ve gained a new group of like-minded friends who treat me as an equal.” Huge thanks to all our volunteers who make the club such a great success.

A truly award-winning charity, this is the latest in a series of honours for our groups and activities including our Harrogate Tandem Club being crowned as Volunteer Team of the Year at Stray FM’s Local Hero awards in 2017. We’ll try not to let this success go to our heads, but it’s great to know that our efforts to get people with a disability #OutThereTogether is being recognised and rewarded!
