Earlier this year we were absolutely delighted to celebrate planting our 5,000th tree across the Wakefield district. Our Wakefield ‘Nature Force’ group meet every week to improve green spaces across the Wakefield community and hit this conservation milestone at the start of our 30th anniversary year. Since it was launched in 2018 the Nature Force group has made a significant impact by improving access and creating new wildlife habitats at sites across the district.
The group were keen to contribute to the Northern Forest, a project to plant 50 million trees across the North of England, and have worked hard throughout the winter season alongside Wakefield Council Countryside Rangers, Wakefield Tree Wardens and the Woodland Trust. So far trees have been planted at sites including Pontefract Park, Shaw Cross, Vale Head Park and Notton Woods.
Ella, Wild About Wakefield Project Officer, says: “I’m very proud of the efforts of the Nature Force group who have worked tirelessly to create new woodlands in our community. On just one day last month the team planted 750 trees working with the Friends of Vale Head Park near Hemsworth. This year we’re celebrating three decades of nature conservation and to mark the occasion we will be planting 30 more trees for every disabled member who accesses its activities. That’s a further 2,250 trees!”
Catherine who volunteers for the Nature Force Group says: “I have helped our members plant trees for over two years now and I love it. It is great to see them taking it upon themselves to make our community better and to help nature. We all come back with a massive smile on our faces after a day helping out in the countryside. We are leaving a great legacy for our children and showing the public what people with disabilities can do.”
