It was always going to be a lively night getting together with 75 of our fabulous tandem club members and volunteers to celebrate the end of the 2019 season. We welcomed riders from all five clubs in Harrogate, Ripon, Wakefield, Wetherby and York, some new this season and others who have been out with us for over 15 years!

As usual, it was an evening of speeches, with almost all the clubs being represented by an enthusiastic spokesperson sharing their thoughts on the season. It was great to have Andrew from the Wetherby club on percussion, providing a drum roll for the announcement of the impressive statistics of the season.

This year we have welcomed over 150 riders on a record 1,703 people rides. Collectively we rode over 25,545 miles which is equivalent to a whopping 1,348,776 foot long German sausages! The only way to tally up tandem miles.

As well as the regular weekly rides, a team of intrepid tandemers took on the ‘Wheels to Wales’ challenge tackling a 100 mile+ route from Chester to Anglesey. In probably the worst summer weather you could imagine, the team faced 47mph head winds and rain akin to jabbing knitting needles in your skin. And yet the smile never left their faces!

Ahead of the 2020 season, which sees Open Country enter its fourth decade, the tandem clubs are gearing up for another great season and more challenges, including an epic ‘30 tandems’ celebrating our anniversary year!
