A Yorkshire disability charity is breaking down barriers to the countryside with the launch of a new, free directory designed to help more people enjoy the great outdoors across West Yorkshire.

Open Country has published its latest Accessible Countryside Directory, a carefully researched guide covering Leeds, Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield.

Available both online and in print, the directory is packed with inspiration for accessible countryside places to visit, outdoor activities, nature and wildlife groups, and organisations welcoming to people with disabilities.

Created by people with disabilities, for people with disabilities, the directory offers clear, practical information to help people plan visits with confidence. However, Open Country says the guide will be invaluable to anyone looking for inclusive, well-researched ideas for enjoying the countryside.

Chief Officer for Open Country, David Shaftoe, said: “Many people are excluded from enjoying the countryside simply because they don’t have access to the right information. This directory is about opening doors – showing people that the outdoors really is for everyone and giving them the confidence to explore it in a way that works for them.”

The new publication features forewords by BBC Look North presenter Amy Garcia and gardening broadcaster Alan Titchmarsh CBE, both highlighting the importance of ensuring nature is open to everyone.

The directories have been created thanks to funding from Wakefield Council, @City Connect, and The West Yorkshire Combined Authority towards the printing and auditing costs.

Open Country exists to help people with disabilities to access and enjoy the countryside, and the charity hopes the directory will encourage more people to discover the physical and mental health benefits of spending time outdoors.

The directory is free to download from
